Minis can
be used for driving. Senior horses, defined as 3 and older, can be trained and
even shown pulling a buggy.
Because a horse can pull up to 2/3 of it's weight the
same 300 lb
mini that only a small child
could ride
could easily be able to pull 200 lbs.
Miniature horses can easily pull and move their own weight.
Consideration must be given to the terrain and the footing that the buggy will
be riding on. Horses' capabilities are partly defined by their conditioning. The
type of work expected seriously impacts how much weight the horse can handle
safely.
So don't ride your mini, because you'll hurt him, that's why people drive their minis instead of riding them.
A few things to consider
Your
mini horse's weight, it's physical condition, natural ability, temperament and
conditioning.
The road surface - hard vs. soft surface. Level asphalt/concrete vs.
dirt/gravel/deep sand/heavy mud.
Ground traction and grade - Incline means more work for your horse. Slippery
surfaces make the horses work much harder, especially starting & stopping.
Proper shoeing (slip protection) is essential.
Vehicle weight - Know the empty weight of your cart/wagon.
