AMHA/AMHR registries explained

The difference in the two main Mini Horse registries.

AMHA Logo
AMHA
or American Miniature Horse Association was founded in 1978, AMHA promotes the breeding, use and perpetuation of a standard of equine excellence in miniature, separate and apart from ponies and other small equine. Horses registered with AMHA must meet the Association standard of perfection and cannot exceed 34 inches in height at the withers as measured from the last hairs of the mane. An animal exceeding 34 inches in height is not eligible for registration with the Association. Temporary papers are issued to eligible Miniature Horses whose parents are both registered with AMHA. If after three years of age the horse is 34 inches or less, the application may be made for permanent registration. A written Standard of Perfection details the criteria for eligible horses. The registry was closed on December 31, 1987, and allows only horses with AMHA-registered parents to be registered. To further ensure the breed's integrity, all foals born after December 31, 1995 must be blood-typed and/or DNA-tested before any of their offspring can be registered.

AMHR logo
AMHR or American Miniature Horse Registry is the original registry for the Miniature Horse in the United States.
In the early 1970s, the American Miniature Horse Registry was created by the American Shetland Pony Club, Inc., to serve the needs of this growing area of equine interest. Today, the Miniature Horse is a popular, versatile, well-respected and much-loved animal. AMHR has two divisions. The "A" division is for horses that are 34 inches or under. The "B" division is for horses that are over 34" and up to 38". Permanent papers are granted at age 3. AMHR allows horses holding AMHA papers to be cross registered for an extra fee. And hardshipping can be done at age 3.
Popularity for both registries varies from region to region and probably from person to person. Some folks like to stick with just one registry because it is less confusing. Then there are folks who have taller minis who like AMHR for its "B" division. People also double and triple register their horses with the 2 registries so to make them more saleable.
